Every season our guests ask us the same things: is it really free, when should we go, what do we bring, is it worth the drive.

This guide is what we tell them.

What the Saturnia hot springs are

There are two places, and the same water feeds both.

The Cascate del Mulino are the natural pools below the village of Saturnia, beside an old mill. The thermal water runs over a bank of limestone and fills a staircase of pale basins. They are free and open day and night.

The Terme di Saturnia are the Saturnia thermal baths proper: a park and resort a little further up the road, with outdoor thermal pools, a spa and a hotel. There you pay to go in.

If you’ve seen one photo of Saturnia, it was almost certainly the Cascate.

The water spends around forty years underground, moving through layers of limestone from Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano you can see from our hills on clear days. It’s paid from 8 in the morning to 8 in the evening and free outside those hours; the current rates are posted at the car park. By late morning in summer the pools fill up, and the car park with them.

After dinner it’s quiet again. Lying in warm water under the night sky is worth the drive on its own.

Weekdays are calmer than weekends. Spring and autumn are calmer than August.

Winter is the season many locals prefer. The air is cold, the water is still 37.5°C, and the steam turns the whole place white.

What to bring and what to wear

Wear your swimsuit under your clothes, and bring:

Water shoes. The limestone edges of the pools are uneven underfoot.

A towel and something warm for afterwards, especially in winter or at night.

Water to drink. Hot water makes you thirsty faster than you’d think.

A bag for wet things. And leave silver jewellery at home: the minerals in the water can tarnish it.

Getting there from Florence or Rome

The Cascate del Mulino are just below the village of Saturnia, beside the road to Montemerano, in the Maremma, the southern corner of Tuscany. Here they are on Google Maps.

By car it’s about two hours and twenty minutes from Rome, and around two and a half hours from Florence, so a little closer to Rome. A car makes everything easier.

By public transport it can be done, but it takes planning. From Rome, a train towards Pisa to Albinia, then Tiemme buses to Manciano and on to Saturnia. From Florence, a train to Grosseto, then a bus via Scansano. Buses don’t run on Sundays, and the trip takes most of a day.

A day trip from Florence means several hours on the road for a couple of hours in the water. A night or two nearby makes more sense, and lets you go at the quiet hours.

Is it worth it?

Yes, if you go at the right hour.

At noon on an August Sunday the Cascate can feel like a crowded beach, and some visitors leave disappointed.

At dawn on a weekday in October, with steam on the water and only a few people around, it’s the version of Saturnia that people come back for.

Other hot springs in Tuscany

Saturnia is the best known, not the only one. Southern Tuscany sits on a lot of warm water, and three other free thermal baths are worth knowing, especially if you’re coming from Florence or Siena.

Bagni San Filippo, on the far side of Monte Amiata, is a stream of hot water running through a wood over white limestone. The largest formation is called the Balena Bianca, the white whale: it’s fragile, so you look at it and bathe in the pools around it. Go in daylight, the path has no lighting.

Bagno Vignoni, in the Val d’Orcia, is a village built around a thermal pool instead of a square. You can’t bathe in the pool itself. Below the village the warm water runs down past the old mills, and people sit with their feet in it.

Bagni di Petriolo, between Siena and Grosseto, is a row of hot pools on the bank of the Farma river, beside a small paid spa. No changing rooms, no facilities, and the stones are slippery: sturdy shoes help.

From us, each one is an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half by car. From Florence, Bagno Vignoni and Petriolo are closer than Saturnia: if you’re staying in the city and have one free day, they make more sense.

We still send our guests to Saturnia first. The water is 37.5°C at any hour, the pools are open day and night, and it’s close enough to go twice in one stay: once at dawn, once after dinner.

Where to stay near the Saturnia hot springs

Stay close enough to go at the quiet hours.

Within a few minutes of the Cascate there are hotels, the resort of the Terme di Saturnia itself, and farm stays in the countryside around Saturnia and Manciano.

We’re one of them: a small farm ten minutes away by car, with two glamping Eco-Suites and three apartments in two small houses. Staying near Saturnia.

The Eco-Suites have a private hot tub on the veranda, filled with salt water, and our pool is salt water too. Neither is thermal water. If you want the springs, they’re ten minutes down the road, and that’s the point.

Guests go to the Cascate at seven and are back on the veranda for breakfast. The Terme di Saturnia thermal baths are a separate place, and that one is paid.

How much does it cost to visit the Saturnia hot springs?
The Cascate del Mulino cost nothing except parking, with rates posted at the car park. The pools of the Cascate del Mulino are shallow natural basins where you sit or lie in the warm water. The thermal park has larger pools.

Are the Saturnia hot springs open in winter?
Yes. The Cascate del Mulino are open all year, day and night, and the water stays at 37.5°C in every season. Winter mornings, with steam on the water, are many locals’ favourite time.

Does the water smell?
Yes, of sulphur, more strongly in the first few minutes; after a while you stop noticing. It can stay in a swimsuit for a wash or two, so bring one you don’t mind about.

Is there a train to Saturnia?
There’s no station in Saturnia. The nearest are Grosseto and Albinia, then Tiemme buses via Manciano, which don’t run on Sundays. A car is much simpler.

Can you visit the Saturnia hot springs on a day trip from Florence?
You can, and organised day tours leave from Florence. But it’s about two and a half hours each way: five hours in the car for a couple of hours in the water. If you can, stay a night nearby and go early in the morning or after dark.

Is Saturnia closer to Rome or Florence?
A little closer to Rome: about two hours and twenty minutes by car, against around two and a half hours from Florence. Saturnia is in the Maremma, the southern corner of Tuscany, not far from the border with Lazio.

Are the hot springs good for children?
Children usually love the warm pools. Keep the soaks short and stay close on the uneven edges.

Are there other free hot springs in Tuscany?
Yes. Bagni San Filippo, in a wood on the slopes of Monte Amiata, and Bagni di Petriolo, along the Farma river between Siena and Grosseto, are both free. At Bagno Vignoni, in the Val d’Orcia, the village pool is only to look at, but the warm water runs down below the village. From Florence, Bagno Vignoni and Petriolo are closer than Saturnia.

Where should I stay to visit the Saturnia hot springs?
Close enough to go early or late.
