The History of Saturnia & The Thermal Baths
Saturnia is considered one of the oldest villages in Italy. Over the centuries, it has witnessed moments of splendor and development.
The historic center of the village still preserves the ruins of various Roman constructions, such as Porta Romana or the Bagno Secco, an ancient cistern for collecting water.
Legend has it that once upon a time, a thermal spring with healing properties capable of curing the wounded and resurrecting the dead used to flow in this area. The spring was diverted outside the walls by the knight Orlando.
Saturnia is globally renowned for its thermal spring, giving rise to the Thermal Park and the Cascate del Mulino (Mill Falls), a free thermal area open 24/7. It consists of a series of natural waterfalls that, over the centuries, have formed numerous small limestone pools. A truly captivating landscape.
Close to the inhabited center of Saturnia, easily accessible from Seme di Carota, is the Etruscan Necropolis of Puntone. Here, the well-preserved “Small house tomb” structures from the fourth century B.C. can still be clearly seen.

Saturnia, aside from the freely accessible thermal waterfall, provides access to one of the most renowned spa facilities globally, centered around a spring. This natural pool features sulfurous water flowing at 37.5 degrees Celsius.

What is there to see in Saturnia besides the hot springs?
The village, up the hill from the springs: Porta Romana, on the ancient Via Clodia, where you can still see the ruts left by Roman carts; Piazza Vittorio Veneto, with fragments of temples and inscriptions left among the flowerbeds; the Archaeological Museum (Ciacci Collection), with Etruscan and Roman finds; the church of Santa Maria Maddalena, dating back to 1188. Just outside the village, the Etruscan Necropolis of Puntone, with burial mounds from the 7th-5th century BC.
Are the Saturnia hot springs free?
Yes: the Cascate del Mulino are natural travertine pools with free access, open day and night. The water comes out at 37.5 °C all year round. If you prefer loungers, changing rooms and equipped pools, there is the thermal spa park, with an entrance fee.
When is the best time to visit Saturnia?
The water is 37.5 °C in every season. Spring and autumn, especially September and October, are the gentlest months: mild days, cool air, fewer people. In summer the waterfalls get crowded in the middle of the day: go at dawn, when the steam blends with the mist, or in the evening.

What to do in Saturnia when it rains?
Go to the springs anyway: sitting in warm water while the rain falls is one of the best things Saturnia has to offer, and there are far fewer people. Then Pitigliano's underground Jewish quarter, a Morellino wine tasting, a long lunch in a trattoria.
How many days do you need for Saturnia and the surroundings?
One day is enough for the springs and the village. With two or three days you can add the tuff towns and Montemerano without rushing, and the sea at Monte Argentario is about 45 minutes away. Staying nearby lets you go to the springs at dawn or in the evening, when they are quietest.
